4 Ways To Sharpen Your Hair Cutting Shears

Blog

If you have hair cutting shears, it's important to care for them properly. This way, they can continue to cut the way that they are supposed to. If you are not sharpening your shears, chances are they will become dull and unusable fairly quickly and since they are expensive, you definitely want to avoid this and prolong their life. Here are four ways that you can sharpen your hair cutting shears:

  1. Aluminum Foil: The cheapest way to sharpen your hair cutting shears is by using aluminum foil. Simply fold the foil over a few times so that it is thick; this way the shears do not immediately cut through the foil. Once you do this, run the aluminum foil over the shears until the aluminum foil has been severely cut through.
  2. Clean With Rubbing Alcohol: Using rubbing alcohol doesn't actually sharpen the shears, but it does help keep them sharp. This is because it gets rid of all the build-up on the shears that cause them to become dull in the first place. Be sure to do this regularly, such as before and after you use them.
  3. Invest in a Whetstone: One of the best ways to sharpen your hair cutting shears is to invest in a whetstone. A whetstone is specifically used to sharpen tools such as cutting shears. On top of this, a whetstone is going to last you for a long time to come, which is why it makes a great investment. To use the whetstone properly, be sure to soak it in oil overnight before you sharpen your shears. This way, your shears are sharpened with the stone without getting stuck on the stone throughout the process. The oil makes the process more fluid and simple. Be sure to wipe the oil off afterward to keep the whetstone in good condition.
  4. Professional Sharpening Tools:  Investing in professional sharpening tools is also a good idea, especially if you are a hairdresser. These are usually easy to carry around and do not require any other tools, such as oil to sharpen properly. They also come with multiple sharpening tools (similar to a pocket knife) to help ensure that you can sharpen them shears the way that you need to when you are ready to give a quick cut.

When you know these four ways to sharpen your hair cutting shears, you can determine what you should consider investing in depending on how you use the hair cutting shears. For more info on this topic, click here.

Choosing An Exciting Career

When I graduated from high school, I knew that I didn't want to go to college--only to sit behind a desk for the rest of my life. Instead, I wanted to work with my hands, meet new people, and enjoy an ever-changing work environment. Those goals prompted me to investigate beauty school, which become the love of my life. I adored everything about beauty school--including learning how to cut hair, do nails, and consult with clients. It took me a long time to develop a loyal client following, but not that I have, I have a stable career that I can do from anywhere. This blog is all about beauty school, so that you can love what you do too.
